For many service members, the transition to civilian life comes with a long to-do list, unfamiliar systems, and important decisions that can affect their futures.

That is where the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ National Veterans Service (NVS) program comes in.

“We do this daily, and we always do it for free.”
— Michael Figlioli, Director, National Veterans Service, VFW Washington Office

VFW’s free services

The VFW’s NVS team is a free resource for veterans, service members, military families and survivors. Through a nationwide network of VFW Accredited Service Officers, the organization helps veterans:

  • navigate the VA claims process;
  • prepare and file claims;
  • gather supporting documentation;
  • pursue appeals; and
  • access programs tied to compensation, pension, education, rehabilitation, employment and more.

In 2025 alone, VFW’s NVS team helped recover $16.2 billion in compensatory awards for more than 608,000 veterans.

Dominic Mele connected with a VFW Accredited Service Officer for help due to injuries sustained during more than a decade of overseas deployments and National Guard service. “I am unable to do some jobs because of my disabilities. They also impacted my first marriage, which ended in divorce.” With help from the VFW, Mele received a 100% disability rating and discovered a renewed sense of purpose.

Expertise, personal care, and no claims shark fees

What sets the program apart is not only its expertise but also its perspective. VFW Accredited Service Officers understand the process and the people going through it.

“We do this daily, and we always do it for free,” said Michael Figlioli, VFW National Veterans Service. “Neither the VFW nor any of our representatives take any portion of a claimant’s award.”

That commitment matters, especially as veterans continue to be targeted by unaccredited agents known as “Claim Sharks” that charge service members, veterans and survivors illegal fees for claims assistance.

In other words, veterans do not have to figure it out alone, and they should not pay for help accessing the benefits they’ve earned through military service.

In 2025 alone, VFW’s NVS team has helped recover $16.2 billion in compensatory awards for over 608,000 veterans.

VFW Accredited Service Officers are professionally trained to represent veterans, from an initial VA claim through later stages and appeals.

Whether you are within 180 days from separation or have been out for years, just go to claims.vfw.org. From there, you will be connected with a VFW Accredited Service Officer who will guide you through the VA claims process from start to finish.
