The United States Capitol Police announced Thursday the death of one of its officers who sustained injuries while responding to this week’s riot in Washington, D.C.

Officer Brian Sicknick was injured while physically engaging with protesters, according to the USCP press release.  After returning to his division office, he collapsed and was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the release states.

Sicknick, who joined the USCP in 2008, enlisted in the New Jersey Air National Guard in 1997. He served as a fire team member and leader at the 108th Security Force Squadron, 108th Wing, located at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. His deployments include Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch and Kyrgyzstan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sicknick was honorably discharged in 2003 as a staff sergeant.

“Staff Sgt. Sicknick’s commitment to service and protect his community, state, and nation will never be forgotten,” a statement from New Jersey National Guard’s Facebook page read.

His death is currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, the USCP, and federal partners.
